Ear problems can be terribly painful, especially in children. Ear infections are the most common illness affecting babies and young children, and the leading reason for visits to the pediatrician. Nearly half of all children will have at least one middle-ear infection before they’re a year old. Two-thirds of them will have had at least one such infection by age 3.
Ear infections occur when the Eustachian tube fails to “straighten out” as we grow. The Eustachian tube or ear canal then cannot drain properly and becomes a breeding ground for bacteria, causing an infection. The culprit? A little muscle called the Tensor Veli Palatini, which attaches to the ear canal, and won’t let the canal move. However a chiropractic adjustment to the upper neck helps relieve the tension on this muscle allowing the ear canal to naturally straighten out and drain.
Standard treatment for most ear infections is with antibiotics, which is effective if the cause is bacterial (antibiotics do nothing to fight off viruses). But use and especially overuse of antibiotics carries its own risks. Recent research indicates that nearly 80 percent of children treated with chiropractic adjustments were free of ear infections for at least the 6-month period following the initial visits (a period that also included maintenance treatments every four to six weeks). Chiropractic initiates drainage of the ear in children, and if drainage continues properly and subsequent infection is avoided, the body’s own immune system builds up antibodies to fight off infection and recover more quickly.
